Chongqing
Chongqing is located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River,at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers in southwest China. Since its founding 3,000 years ago, Chongqing has been called Jiangzhou, Yuzhou, and Gongzhou, before getting its present name nearly 800 years ago. Since the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), many dynasties have set up administrative institutions that have endowed the city with brilliant cultures.
Standing at the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers, Chongqing is known as "the City of Fog", "the Mountain City", and "the River Town" as well, and the night scence are special sight of Chongqing city.Surrounded by mountains, the city is hot and rainy in summer, so it is sometimes called "the Furnaces". In history, Chongqing was originally the capital of the State of Ba three thousand years ago, and the place was renamed for many times till it got the name Chongqing (Double Celebration)eventually. In 1997,Chongqing became the fourth municipality directly under the Central Government, together with Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.
Chongqing attracts visitors from home and abroad for its cultural heritage and other tourist attractions. A tourist traveling to Chongqing comes for one reason, and that is not to explore Chiang Kai Shek's provisional capital but instead to catch a Yangtze river cruise. Chinese markets are always an experience that cater to each one of your senses- Chongqing's are no exception. Unlike the two bigger cities of Beijing and Shanghai, Chongqing feels distinctly Chinese. While the ancient and future capitals of the country stand as examples of a China carefully presented to the outside world, of what was, and what shall be. Chongqing is not an extroverted older brother, it is an inland river port, and its makeup and character feel authentically representative of a different, more provincial China.
Ciqikou Old Town
Ciqikou Old Town, dating back to Song Dynasty, is located in the suburbs of Chongqing City. Covering an area of 1.18 square kilometers and having been through hundreds of years of changes, Ciqikou has now been reserved by Chongqin as a traditional street under key protection. Today it offers a glimpse of the peaceful laid-back life in the Sichuan countryside and is somewhere to take a break from the busy commercial world of Chongqing.
A number of old courtyard compounds still stand here. Small as it is, the town used to have several temples, and one of them, Taoism temple, had been turned into an elementary school. What makes the school special is one of its students. A small class room, small stool and desk, oil lamp, blackboard, and a picture of Doctor Sun Yetsan, that's the custom of the time. Nobel Prize Winner Samuel CC Ding, in Chinese we know him as Ding Zhaozhong once studied here. It's an old sleepy town built in the Song Dynasty. Although it's preserved as a tourist town, you don't have to pay to get in. The town's name, Ciqikou, means porcelain harbor, and the community prospered from the porcelain trade.
It is often said that a visit to China is a cultural experience. This is never more true than when you visit a place such as Ci Qi Kou where you will find the local residents dedicated to their traditional way of life, unaffected by modern influences to be found in the larger towns and cities. Above all, you will find a friendly welcome awaits you as the people of Ciqikou share their special way of life with you for the duration of your visit.
