On April 15, 1983, Tokyo became the first location outside of the United States to open a Disney park. Dubbed Tokyo Disneyland, this 115 acre theme park was built by in the same style as Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida and has delighted millions from around the world who have made the
trip to Tokyo to see Mickey, Minnie and all the others on
Japan tours.
While you may know quite a bit about Disneyland here in the states, its Tokyo version is a little different with some interesting features that you may not know about. Check out some interesting facts about Tokyo Disney below:
• Tokyo Disney is actually owned by The Oriental Land Company, which licenses, the theme from The Walt Disney Company. This and its companion park, Tokyo DisneySea, are the only Disney Parks not owned by The Walt Disney Company.
• In 2009, Tokyo Disneyland hosted a little more than 13.5 million Guests, making it the number three most visited theme park in the world behind The Magic Kingdom in Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim.
• While Japanese is the primary language spoken, English-speaking Cast Members and assistance can be found throughout the park. Many of the rides also include headphones so you can follow along in English.
• On August 27, 2010, a housewife from Gumma (just north of Tokyo) visited the park with husband and two children when she was surprised to be told she was the park’s 500 millionth visitor. As a reward, the 38 year-old was rewarded with free admission to Tokyo’s two Disney theme parks for five years.
• Because of the weather in Japan, Main Street is covered by a glass canopy.
• The Haunted Mansion is the only attraction you’ll find on your
Japan trip that can be found at each of the four Magic Kingdoms (Anaheim, Orlando, Hong Kong and Tokyo).
• Tokyo Disneyland was the last Disney Theme Park to still use the A through E ticket standard to give access to various park attractions and rides.
• While most Cast Members are Japanese, some Disney characters are played by non-Japanese Cast Members, including Cinderella and the Prince, The Little Mermaid and Alice in Wonderland.
