How To Avoid Jet Lag
How To Avoid Jet Lag
While traveling is something most of us look forward to, one aspect we all dread is jet lag.  Longer flights such as trips to Asia or tours to Europe are most likely to induce a state of unwelcomed jet lag for most vacationers.  While the changes in time zones are unavoidable, there are a few tips travelers can keep in mind to prevent the strain of jet lag.

    * Be aware of what time zones you’re flying across, and adjust your schedule accordingly the weeks before.  Depending on where you’re flying, push your schedule either an hour forward or backward, allowing your body and mind to adjust to your destination’s time zone with increased ease.

    * Prior to your flight, make sure you have everything taken care of, to ensure that you aren’t tense or stressed throughout your long trip.  Also take care of yourself before boarding the actual plane; you won’t be able to rest on board if you are feeling under the weather.

    * During the flight, make sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout.  This will result in you feeling much more refreshed upon landing.  Avoid alcoholic beverages, as these may only cause you to feel sick in flight.

    * Also make sure to pack sleep aides with you to ensure you are comfortable.  Ear plugs, blindfolds, neck rests, socks, and iPods are all great items to keep in your bag.

    * Once your flight takes off, adjust your watch to the time of your destination.  If its daytime there, try to stay awake and if it’s nighttime, do the opposite.

    * Also try to eat according to schedule of your destination.  Airlines usually serve food during times that coincide with your departure location, not with that of your destination, therefore throwing off your schedule.  Eating a meal high in protein before landing will also help you stay up if you need to.

    * If it is daylight once you land, commit to staying active outside, even if you are exhausted.  The sunlight will help you stay up and adjust to the new time zone.

    * If you simply cannot stay up, allow yourself a 30 minute nap only.

    * Replenish your body with vitamins and supplements, which can aide in boosting energy.

So while none of us may ever completely escape the burden of jet lag, these tips should make adjusting to different time zones a little easier.  Keep these in mind while you’re on a 4 day tour to Beijing or Japan, and you should still be able to enjoy your vacation with a rested mind.
